Best sites for movie clips for edits (2026)
Seven places editors get movie and series clips, compared by the only things that matter: what you search by, what you get back, and how long it takes to have a clean file on your timeline. One of them is ours. We say so where it comes up and try to be fair to the rest.
How we compared them
Every source was judged on the same job: get a specific moment from a specific film, in clean quality, as a downloadable clip. That rules out generic stock footage sites straight away, and it explains why a tool can be excellent for memes and poor for edits. We looked at what you search by (dialogue, description, nothing), whether silent moments are findable, clip length, download, cost and catalog.
The seven sources
Clip Engine (ours)
Clip Engine cuts films and series into individual scenes and writes a plain-language description of what is on screen for each one. You search by that description: "a man walking alone in the rain", "a boxer training alone at night", "two friends laughing on a rooftop". It is the only tool on this list where a silent shot is as findable as a quote. Each title also has a source page listing every scene, which is the closest thing to a searchable scene pack.
Yarn (getyarn.io)
The best-known quote search. Type a line, get every clip where it is spoken, cut tightly around the words and ready to share. Free, no account, very broad catalog. Weak for edits because the clips are short and because anything without dialogue is not indexed. Full comparison: Yarn alternative.
PlayPhrase.me
Also subtitle-based. It plays a running sequence of every movie moment containing your phrase, which is superb for supercuts and language learners. Pulling one specific clip for an edit is not what it is built for.
Clip.Cafe
Quote search with a download button, so the closest to Yarn with a file at the end. Same limit as all subtitle tools: you have to remember the line, and silent beats do not exist.
Flim
Searches film stills by description, with strong filters for colour, shot type and era. The right idea for mood boards and shot references. It returns images, not clips, so for an edit you still need to source the footage elsewhere.
Scene pack sites and channels
Whole films pre-cut into hundreds of clips, often 4K, shared by the edit community through TikTok, Twitter/X, Discord and file-hosting links. Best raw quality on this list and the fastest way to get an entire film. No search inside a pack, uneven availability, links that die. See where to get movie clips for edits for how to use them well.
Official YouTube channels
Studio and licensed channels post iconic scenes in 1080p. Good for checking a scene quickly. Coverage is whatever marketing uploaded, clips carry a logo or end card, and the platform's terms do not permit downloading.

FAQ
What is the best website for movie clips for editing?
For a scene you can describe, Clip Engine. For a scene you remember by its line, Yarn or Clip.Cafe. For a whole film in bulk, a scene pack. Most editors use two of these.
Is there a scene pack website with search?
Packs are folders, so no. Clip Engine's source pages are the nearest equivalent: every scene from a title on one page, each searchable and downloadable on its own.
Why do stock footage sites show up when I search for movie clips?
They rank for the words "clips" and "footage". They contain generic royalty-free footage and no scenes from films or series.
